Symbolic Masonic Rings and Jewelry

Traditionally Masons wear Masonic Jewelry and Rings to symbolize their membership in the brotherhood. Often these prized heirlooms are passed down from one generation of Masons to another.

Freemasons Brotherhood

The first Freemason Grand Lodge was formed in London in 1717. Although the stonemasons were the founders of the current organization, there were many preceding organizations and the Masonic symbols were used by these various other groups for centuries. The principles of the brotherhood are self-awareness, self-improvement and above all concern and help for others. Masons routinely contribute to charities and in times past were responsible for the creation of public schools in North America and Europe. The Masonic lodge has not required members to be actual masons for several hundred years.

Although conspiracy theories abound, the Masons have primarily been a philanthropic organization and they have consistently devoted time and money to many causes throughout the years. Did you know that the Masons have been active in supporting the Shriners Hospitals? They also have many social functions, but often the purpose behind these functions is to raise funds for their charities.

Types of Masonic Jewelry

Emblems often designate membership in a Masonic lodge and there are many available. The choice depends depends of personal preferences, although the most popular is a signet ring. Other items are cuff links, tie pins, pocket watches and even pendants. All of the items will have various Masonic symbols.

Masonic Symbols

The most common symbols are the square and compass which represents the foundation of all freemasonry. Symbols in freemasonry often indicate a particular lodge membership, degree attained and master or past-master status. They are a way that a Mason can indicate his involvement with the organization and what aspects of Freemasonry he or she believes most important. One of the most universal and important symbols is the square and compass with the letter "G" in the center which stands for geometry, the basis of Freemasonry and the original builder, God. Another important symbol is the columns, often with the square and compass in the center. There are many other symbols including the trowel and plumb level.

Only Masons Should Wear Masonic Jewelry

There are cases where a beloved family member passes down a ring that a non Mason might wear but generally only members should wear Masonic rings and jewelry. There are no hard and fast rules on the right way to wear the jewelry.

Cleaning Masonic Rings and Jewelry

Since some pieces are quite ornate or have enameled or synthetic colored areas, they should be cleaned gently. If you are at all concerned, the piece should be taken to a jeweler for professional cleaning. Silver pieces can be cleaned with one of the commercially available silver cleaners.
